Many processes and procedures in the adult world feel linear:
-Earn money: pay periodic taxes
-Shop/prepare meal/eat/clean up
-Start PC/open browser/search for topic
-Read an article/book/recipe from start to finish
However, the process of learning is a little bit different, especially in childhood. It can benefit from a non-linear approach.
In the mid-twentieth century, Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori observed that children, given the opportunity, will spontaneously choose to practice a skillset to which they have previously been introduced.
St Nicholas School of the Arts applies a non-linear paradigm. Students read something interesting. They then discuss, and write. Then the students share their own writing, which is respected and discussed.
When science is the topic, observation is the student's method. Student writing or visual art or music or drama are the result of the student's observations; a personal expression of interest and comprehension which can be shared.
Practice develops skills.
It is not intrinsically boring.
