I am always surprised when life intervenes and my plans change as a result.
Yesterday, as I drove home through the remnants of tropical weather brought ashore by Hurricane Cindy, I looked forward to a wonderful weekend chock full of tasks to accomplish.
As I dwelled on these thoughts, my cell phone received a text: that my electricity was out. Actually, it was out for the block. Not the whole block, just our side of the street. It was 5:10 PM.
The text advised the electricity would be restored by 7:00 PM. last night.
A subsequent text bumped up the restoration of power to 10:00 PM.
Restoration was eventually conjectured to be complete by 2:00 PM today. Fortunately, it did not take that long: power was restored before dawn today.
Although I enjoyed a delightful dinner with family who had not lost their power, I lost sleep and peace of mind because my own plans had gone awry. The cause of the outage was lightning. It was just one of those things.
Because I could not follow my usual routine last night, I felt like I was running behind when I awoke today. In fact, the lack of power last night gave me bonus time to think, to organize, and to get some much needed rest.
Lesson: Life is full of surprises. Adapt; enjoy the moment.
